Indian Gooseberry – Phyllanthus emblica Nutrition Benefits

Indian Gooseberry also called as Emblica officinalis or Phyllanthus emblica is a miracle food. Indian gooseberries has been an integral part of Ayurvedic medicine for over 5000 years. However the western medicine considered it as just a folk medicine; until recently the western medicine attributed the medicinal value of indian gooseberry to the high vitamin c content in it.

Medical Research on Indian Gooseberry:

Indian Gooseberry Nutrition BenefitsResearch on Indian gooseberry is still in the preliminary stages, however even in the starting stages the research has demonstrated strong antiviral and antimicrobial properties. Though the huge amount of vitamin C in Indian Gooseberry aids in the general immunity of the human body, Indian gooseberries had other agents that are responsible for the the very high level of antiviral and anti-microbial properties.

There is also clear evidence that the extracts of this berry can induce apoptosis and modify gene expression in osteoclasts and hence aids in the recovery of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis (especially in women). [quote_right]Indian Gooseberries aids in anti-aging and improves vitality and prevents major diseases[/quote_right]Unlike other fruits where there are only claims of anti-cancer properties, there are scientific evidences that it has potential activity against some cancers.

Though no human tests are conducted so far for testing its effects on pancreatitis, animal study (on rats) has proved that treatment with Emblica officinalis reduced the severity of acute pancreatitis. It is also found to aid in the spontaneous repair and regeneration of the pancreas.

There are experimental proofs for the medicinal value of the bark, leaves and the fruits to have curative effects for inflamation, cancer and age-related kidney diseases. Studies proved it beyond doubt that diabetes can be controlled by regular consumption of this fruit.

Finally the western medicine agrees that the medicinal value of Amla (Indian gooseberry) is not just because of very high levels of vitamin C (around 445 mg/100g), but there are several other antioxidants like a high density of ellagitannins such as emblicanin A (37%), emblicanin B (33%), punigluconin (12%) and pedunculagin (14%). In addition this fruit also contains punicafolin and phyllanemblinin A, B, C, D, E and F. It also contains polyphenols like flavonoids, kaempferol, ellagic acid and gallic acid.

Indian Gooseberry in Ayurveda and Siddha Medicine:

There are two varieties of Indian gooseberries, one is the regular variety and the other is the darker variety. The darker variety (called as கருநெல்லி in Tamil) is almost extinct now (available only in the southern region of India). The darker variety is considered to be very powerful and the strongest anti-aging agent known to man. The regular variety also has good anti-aging benefits, but not comparable to the darker varieties.

In both Siddha Medicine and Ayurveda this fruit is used as an integral component in treating various ailments and diseases. It is the main component of the Ayurvedic dietary supplement named Chyawanprash and the siddha dietary supplement named Jeeva Legium. These dietary supplements are meant to boost general immunity and to prevent diseases like diabetes, kidney diseases, digestive diseases and many other. It is also considered to have strong anti-aging benefits and helps in prolonging the lifespan.

Ayurveda and Siddha uses most of the parts of this tree like dried and fresh fruits, seed, leaves, root, bark and flowers. According to Ayurveda, aamla (Indian Gooseberry) balances all three doshas. This fruit has five out of the six tastes recognized by Ayurveda, and hence it balances all the three doshas. According to Ayurveda this fruit aids in the following

  • Increases the lifespan

  • Thank you so much for making your research so readily available. I have several autoimmune issues that have gotten so far out of control that I have been unable to work for more than 12 years. I was once a college professor & now, I have to have assistance to walk, dress, obtain/consume food or drink, go to the restroom……..etc….. Of course there is more but the purpose of this comment is NOT TO SOLICIT SYMPATHY, BUT TO PROVIDE A HEARTFELT THANKS TO THOSE MAKING THIS SITE & ITS CONTENTS AVAILABLE TO US. But, since I am speaking for many, I cannot close without mentioning that I, like so many others with overactive immune systems, live in excruciating pain that is coupled with debilitating fatigue. In fact, I had always had a high threshold for pain & I cannot believe a person can live from day to day in this much discomfort or have as much difficulty as I hear, even from our medical professionals, that diagnosing people is so hard. SO, AGAIN, THANKS! WE NEED YOUR HELP!
