An abscess is usually a collection of pus within a cavity formed in a tissue. It can occur anywhere in the body, but generally occurs on the skin and the gums. There may be several reasons for the occurrence of abscess.
Abscess – Causes:
1) They are generally caused because of infection.
2) They are also often caused by foreign materials like wooden splinters, rust, needles and thorns. The formation of abscess is to prevent the foreign material/infection from spreading to other parts of the body.
Abscess – Symptoms:
The common symptoms are swelling, redness, pain and sometimes fever. Most of the abscesses occur on the surface of the skin making them not dangerous. However internal abscesses may harm the lungs, brain, kidneys and trachea.
Abscess – Conventional Treatment:
Abscesses are usually caused by infection, hence most doctors prescribe antibiotics. Wound abscesses cannot be treated with antibiotics, hence in those cases doctors’ advice surgical intervention, debridement, and curettage.
Abscess – Natural Treatment and Home Remedies:
Siddha (also Ayurveda) prescribes drumstick leaves (Moringa oleifera) for treating abscess. The leaves should be heated in two glasses of water until the volume reduces to one glass. It should then be filtered and consumed. If you don’t have access to fresh leaves you can opt for the powdered leaves. This is extremely beneficial if the abscess is in the starting stages.
The abscess should be washed regularly with sterile water. Neem and turmeric being anti-microbial may be applied over the abscess externally. The combination of neem and turmeric will help to stop the bleeding and also aid in quick wound healing.
Cat’s claw is another herb that can help in curing the disease. One may consume half a gram of cat’s claw extract thrice a day for good results. However unlike Moringa oleifera, cat’s claw is not safe for people who are pregnant, or those who had an organ-transplant or someone who use a blood thinner.
To aid the treatment one can consume supplements like leafy green vegetables, pineapples. Pineapples contain a chemical agent called as bromelain, which is a strong anti-inflammatory agent and quickens the curing process. One should also drink ample amount of water every day. Fruits, blue-green algae and probiotic yogurt are good supplements for this condition. Especially when you use antibiotics, the body will lose the good bacteria as well, and this can be replenished by consumed probiotic yogurt.
Foods to avoid:
Avoiding refined foods, especially refined sugar is helpful. These refined foods are highly inflammatory and will slow down the healing process.
