Diabetes – Home Remedy and Ayurvedic Treatment

Diabetes, technically called as Diabetes mellitus, is actually a set of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood glucose level, either because the pancreas (Islets of Langerhans) does not produce sufficient insulin, or because cells do not respond to the insulin in the blood.

Types of Diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes mellitus: It happens because of the failure of pancreas (Islets of Langerhans) to produce insulin. This is a common form of diabetes and patients usually take insulin injection or pump to fight against this disease.
Type 2 Diabetes mellitus: In this case despite pancreas producing insulin, the body will not respond to it. It is also called as “adult-onset diabetes”.

Gestational diabetes: This usually occurs to pregnant women, where they develop a high blood glucose level. This usually subsides after delivery.

  • 366 million people have diabetes in 2011; by 2030 this will have risen to 552 million
  • The number of people with type 2 diabetes is increasing in every country
  • 80% of people with diabetes live in low- and middle-income countries
  • The greatest number of people with diabetes are between 40 to 59 years of age

  • Diabetes caused at least USD 465 billion dollars in healthcare expenditures in 2011; 11% of total healthcare expenditures in adults (20-79 years)

Symptoms of Diabetes:

The high glucose level in blook will lead to polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (persistant thirst) and polyphagia (increased hunger). Other symptoms are loss of weight and blurred vision. The patient may also get a lot of skin rashes.

Heredity is an important factor, this coupled with a few triggers can lead to diabetes. Recent study shows that Coxsackie B4 virus is an important triggering factor. Other major reasons are auto-immune attack by T cells. Factors like stress, obesity, poor diet, excess intake of sugar (especially things like high fructose corn syrup and fructose) and lack of physical activity also plays a role.

According to Ayurveda diabetes (called as madhumeh) is caused due to imbalance in all three doshas (especially vata). Ayurveda also says that this disease can lead to heart, kidney and vision related problems.

Important Checklist to prevent/fight diabetes:

  • Eating Right is extremely important, eat at right times and chew your food well before swallowing.
  • Avoid saturated fats and high fat foods. Add leafy greens, cabbages and cauliflower in regular diet.
  • Eat ample amount of fruits and low fat dairy like Indian buttermilk. One need not worry about consuming fruits, but preferable to avoid sugary fruits like bananas.
  • Avoid refined foods of any kind, avoid white rice and refined wheat flour. Replace refined food with finger millet, millet and oats.coffee, sugar, refined flour, alcohol.
  • Avoid overeating.
  • Consume sprouts as the major source of protein.
  • Avoid stress and anxiety.
  • Cut down on salt intake, avoid every form of junk foods.

Home Remedies for Diabetes

  • Indian Gooseberry (amala), is an excellent medicine for controlling blood sugar level. It can be taken seperately or as Triphala churna powder (learn more about Triphala Churna). Regular consumption of Amala will not only control blood sugar level but also improves overall health
  • Psyllium husk is another good medicine for diabetes. It has several other medicinal uses too.
  • Mango leaves are highly revered in the Indian subcontinent. It has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties, in addition to that it helps in curing diabetes. The leaves should be soaked in pure water (after washing thoroughly)overnight. That water should be consumed the next day in an empty stomach. This is an excellent home remedy for diabetes.
  • Curry leaves is an integral part of any Indian dish. It is extremely nutritious and has numerous medicinal properties. It is very effective in bringing down the blood sugar level.
  • Fenugreek and fenugreek leaves (methi leaves) are a very effective in controlling diabetes. In addition to controlling diabetes it has numerous other medicinal uses. It also controls the skin rashes that are associated with diabetes.
  • Neem, is considered as divine in India. It is one of the most powerful anti-viral agent known to man. Taking tender neem leaves in the morning (need powder can also be used) is a quick way to control diabetes.
  • Bitter gourd is another natural food that can be used effectively to fight diabetes. Bitter gourd can be cooked as there are several tasty recipes. It can also be used in the powder form.
  • Cinnamon is another herb that is effective for diabetes.

Yoga and Physical activity:

An active lifestyle coupled with certain yoga can help in leading a healthy and normal life. Regular walking can help in weight control, it relieves stress and indirectly aids in controlling diabetes. Agni Pran (A form of breathing exercise) is also found to be very effective against Diabetes.
