Back Pain (Backache) – Ayurvedic Cure and Home Remedy

Backache is becoming an epidemic lately.  It is no surprise with the kind of lifestyle that we are leading today. Sitting motionless in front of a computer, poor diet, poor job timing and zero physical activity are the major reason for this common problem. The most common form of backache is the pain in the middle and lower lumbar region. One should react immediately to the first symptoms and should not let time pass as the pain will become severe and irreversible. In ayurveda joint pains and back aches are classified as diseases caused due to Vata Imbalance. This disease is addressed as Prishth shool.

Major causes of Backache:

  • Improper diet and junk food
  • Joint Pains
  • Obesity
  • Sitting immobile for long hours
  • Peptic Ulcer
  • Constipation
  • Sedate lifestyle and lack of physical activity
  • Women wearing high heel shoes.

These are some of the reasons for back ache (especially lower back pain). There are some additional factors like improper sleeping pose and carrying heavy loads.

Back Pain Treatment

Back Pain Home RemedyThis being a common disease, people should be more aware of the causes and address the causes, just like the old saying “prevention is better than cure”, but if you have already got this problem, then it should be addressed in the right way. One should have a checklist to identify the exact reason for this problem. Back pain may occur due to wide range of reasons, right from poor sleep posture to issues in kidney. So one should have a checklist and strike off those factors that are not relevant and focus on the actual causes. A treatment should always be based on curing the disease and not just suppressing the symptoms. A simple pain killer will suppress the pain temporarily. However if you are not addressing the cause then it will have long term implications.

Prevention and Correction:

The first step in addressing the backache is having a healthy balanced diet and maintaining a normal weight. Obesity is one of the major causes, and reaching an ideal weight can greatly reduce the stress on joints and spine. Having some physical activity will not only alleviate the back pain, but also will rejuvenate the entire system and cure several diseases. On should also use appropriate foot wear and pillows. People who work for long hours in front of the computer should learn how to sit correctly, it is also advisable to opt for a lower lumbar support for preventing back pain. Home Remedies:

Garlic and Ginger:  Garlic and ginger both are known anti-inflammatory agents and alleviates pain. Heating garlic in mustard or sesame oil and then applying warm oil over the back region and massaging it gently can give immediate pain relief. It is better to opt for extra virgin sesame oil for doing this, the content should not be overheated (use only mild heat). Another method is to consume Ginger and garlic together after boiling them, it might taste awful. For those taste conscious people, a ginger-garlic paste can be made (fresh paste) and used as a spice in regular dishes.

CusCus Grass with Sugar:

Back pain can be controlled by consuming equal quantity of cuscus grass and sugar mixed thoroughly, this mixture can be consumed twice daily along with warm milk for pain relief.

Lemon & Honey:

Add lemon juice and honey in warm water, also add a pinch of common salt to it. Drink this mixture twice to have quick backache relief.

Ajwain Seeds and Salt:

Ajwain Seeds (Bishop Weed) is an excellent medicine for back pain. In a clean cotton fabric put Ajwain seeds and common salt together. Wrap the cloth so that the contents are well trapped inside. Warm the content by placing it in a preheated vessel, and then place the entire wrapped cloth in the painful region. Keep pressing the fabric gently over the patient’s back.

Practice Yoga:

  • Bhujangasana
  • Shalabhasana
  • Halasana
  • Uttarpad asana[/starlist]

Bhujangasana is an excellent physical posture to combat backache. Any one who practices it for 5 minutes a day for a week will get great relief from the pain.
