Ashwagandha – Indian Ginseng – Powerful Ayurvedic Herb

The binomial name of Ashwagandha is Withania somnifera. It is also commonly known as Indian ginseng,  poison gooseberry and winter cherry. It belongs to the Solanaceae or nightshade family. This plant is cultivated in several states in India and Nepal. This herb is considered to be very powerful and is used for various treatments in Ayurveda.

All the parts of this plant are used as medicine for different purposes, the berries and leaves are used to treat tumors and ulcers. However the brown tuberous root is the most important part of this herb, it is used as an Ayurvedic medicine to treat several diseases and disorders.
